Target Information
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of 4 RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins.
This gene encodes a cytoplasmic ribosomal protein that is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S6E family. It is a major substrate of ribosomal protein kinases, with phosphorylation occurring on five C-terminal serine residues by different kinases.
Phosphorylation is induced by various stimuli such as growth factors, tumor-promoting agents, and mitogens, while dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest. This protein may play a role in regulating cell growth and proliferation through selective translation of specific mRNA classes.
As typical for ribosomal protein genes, multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
