Adrenergic receptors (ARs) are members of the 7-transmembrane domain G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily that bind the endogenous catecholamines epinephrine and norepinephrine.
There are nine known receptor subtypes:

• Alpha-1 AR subtypes: 1A/D, 1B, 1C
• Alpha-2 AR subtypes: 2A, 2B, 2C
• Beta AR subtypes: 1, 2, 3

These receptors play key roles in various physiological and pathological processes such as:

• Hypertension and cardiac dysfunction (heart failure, ischemia, arrhythmias)
• Diabetes and glaucoma
• Depression and impotence

Alpha-1A adrenergic receptor (A1AR) subtypes are involved in regulating blood pressure through vascular tone and cardiac output modulation. They also affect uterine contraction, hepatic glucose metabolism, heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) expression, proto-oncogene expression, and mitogenesis.
Additionally, norepinephrine activation of alpha-1 AR can increase nitric oxide synthase (NOS) levels in the hypothalamus, which may influence hormone release such as LH, androgens, estrogen, and progesterone.
