Product Specific Information
The monoclonal antibody OX26 reacts with rat CD71 (Transferrin Receptor), a glycoprotein functioning as a homodimer on cell surfaces to mediate iron uptake via binding to iron-saturated transferrin.
CD71 is expressed by proliferating hematopoietic lineage cells, but not by mature resting cells or hematopoietic stem cells. Expression increases upon antigen or mitogen stimulation, correlating with cell proliferation.
It is also expressed in endothelial cells of brain capillaries, cortical neurons, oligodendrocytes, kidney tubules, hepatocytes, pancreatic cells, and muscle cells.
The OX26 antibody has been reported to exhibit agonist activity.

Target Information
Cellular uptake of iron occurs via receptor-mediated endocytosis of ligand-occupied transferrin receptor into specialized endosomes. Endosomal acidification leads to iron release, and the apotransferrin-receptor complex is recycled to the cell surface.
The transferrin receptor is essential for erythrocyte and nervous system development. Serum transferrin receptor (sTfR) is used to detect erythropoietin (EPO) misuse and to diagnose anemias related to conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, pregnancy, irritable bowel syndrome, and HIV infection.
