Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms a subunit of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I. It is associated with HLA Class I antigens expressed on various cell types including lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial, and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes. Beta-2 microglobulin is also present in free form in plasma.
The amino acid sequence of B2M is homologous to the constant regions of immunoglobulin heavy and light chains, featuring a predominantly beta-pleated sheet structure. It is ubiquitously expressed in the cytoplasm and involved in antigen processing and presentation. Additionally, it plays roles in TCR signaling and downstream signaling in naive CD8+ cells. The B2M gene is located on chromosome 15, and mutations in this gene can lead to hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia. Beta-2 microglobulin levels are used to assess renal function and serve as a prognostic marker for HIV infection.
