Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that is a subunit of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I. It is associated with HLA Class I antigens and expressed on many cell types including lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial, and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes.
It is also found in free form in plasma and has an amino acid sequence homologous to immunoglobulin heavy and light chain constant regions, forming a beta-pleated sheet structure.
B2M is involved in antigen processing and presentation, TCR signaling, and downstream signaling in naive CD8+ cells. The B2M gene is located on chromosome 15, and mutations can lead to hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia.
Beta-2-microglobulin levels are used to assess renal function and serve as a prognostic marker for HIV infection.
