Target Information
Glucagon is a 29-residue polypeptide hormone (MW 3482) produced in the pancreas. Enteroglucagon (oxyntomodulin) is a related hormone produced in the intestinal mucosa, consisting of glucagon’s 29 amino acids plus 8 additional residues.
Glucagon stimulates glycogenolysis, lipolysis, gluconeogenesis, and ketogenesis—antagonistic to insulin action—thus increasing blood glucose levels.
Immunocytochemical studies show glucagon localized in pancreatic A (alpha) cells, comprising 15–20% of islet cells, mainly at the periphery.
Glucagon-specific antibodies are useful for cell and tumor marker studies and hormone quantification in research.
