Target Information
The preB cell receptor, CD179b, is expressed on proB and preB cells and plays a role in signal transduction for proliferation and differentiation during B cell development. It contributes to allelic exclusion at the Ig heavy chain locus and promotes Ig light chain gene rearrangements.
CD179b encodes one of the surrogate light chain subunits, belonging to the immunoglobulin gene superfamily. Mutations in this gene can lead to B cell deficiency and agammaglobulinemia, an autosomal recessive disease characterized by low or absent antibody production. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
