Target Information
CD1a is a non-polymorphic MHC Class I related cell surface glycoprotein expressed in association with beta-2 microglobulin. It is found in cortical thymocytes, Langerhans cells, interdigitating cells, certain T-cell leukemias, and various other tissues.
CD1a mediates the presentation of lipid and glycolipid antigens to T cells. The human genome contains five CD1 family genes (CD1a–e) organized on chromosome 1, differing in localization and lipid ligand specificity. CD1a localizes to the plasma membrane and early endocytic vesicles. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been observed, but their biological validity has not been determined.
