Target Information

Adenoviruses are DNA viruses widespread in nature and frequently cause acute upper respiratory tract infections (common colds).
There are 49 known human adenovirus serotypes divided into six subgroups (A–E).
They are important causes of respiratory illness, conjunctivitis, and gastroenteritis, and have been recognized as potential causes of sexually transmitted diseases.
Some types have oncogenic potential, though most cause self-limiting febrile illnesses characterized by inflammation of conjunctivae and the respiratory tract.
The virus can be isolated from most surgically removed tonsils/adenoids, indicating latent infections.
In immunosuppressed patients (e.g., AIDS), reactivation may occur, causing disease.
Adenovirus vectors, particularly Ad5-based, are widely used in gene therapy research.
Adenovirus capsids contain three major proteins: hexon, penton, and fiber.
