Target Information
Immunoglobulin classes share a basic structure of four polypeptide chains: two heavy chains (five types) and two light chains (kappa, lambda; both ~22.5 kDa).
Kappa and lambda chains each have variable and constant regions, differentiated by antigenic properties of the constant region.
The normal ratio of kappa to lambda is approximately 70:30.
Antibodies to the kappa light chain are useful in identifying leukemias, plasmacytomas, and certain non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas.
Demonstration of clonality in lymphoid infiltrates indicates malignancy.
