Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol and is cleaved into the active 17 kDa protein upon inflammasome activation. This process involves caspase-1 activation, which cleaves pro-IL-1 beta. Unlike classical secretory proteins, IL-1 beta lacks a signal peptide and is secreted via an alternative pathway. It signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1 alpha, and its activity is regulated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA). IL-1 beta is crucial in innate immune defense, inducing other proinflammatory cytokines and acute-phase responses. Elevated IL-1 beta levels are linked to chronic inflammatory diseases, and neutralizing antibodies have potential therapeutic value.
