Target Information
Leptin is a 167 amino acid protein hormone (~16 kDa) encoded by the obese (ob) gene. It plays a key role in regulating body weight, metabolism, and reproductive function. Leptin is mainly produced by adipocytes, reflecting total body fat mass. It is also secreted by stomach epithelium and placenta cells. Leptin receptors are abundant in the hypothalamus, T lymphocytes, and endothelial cells, mediating effects on hunger, thermogenesis, and energy expenditure. Leptin influences hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, wound healing, inflammation, immune responses, pubertal development, and fetal growth. Dysregulation of leptin is associated with obesity, anorexia nervosa, insulin resistance, and hypertension.
