Target Information
Relaxins are endocrine and autocrine/paracrine hormones belonging to the insulin gene superfamily. In humans, there are three non-allelic relaxin genes (RLN1, RLN2, RLN3), with RLN1 and RLN2 sharing high sequence homology. The encoded protein is synthesized as a single-chain polypeptide, and the active form consists of an A and B chain linked by disulfide bonds. Relaxin is produced by the ovary and acts on the reproductive system to ripen the cervix, elongate the pubic symphysis, and inhibit uterine contraction. It may also play roles in sperm motility, blood pressure regulation, heart rate control, and hormone release. Multiple polyadenylation sites and alternatively spliced transcript variants exist for this gene.
