Target Information
Cellular retinaldehyde-binding protein (CRALBP) plays a crucial role in the regeneration of 11-cis-retinal used in rod visual pigments such as opsin and rhodopsin. After photoisomerization in the rod outer segment, 11-cis-retinal is converted to all-trans-retinal and then to all-trans-retinol. This compound diffuses into the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), where it is reconverted to 11-cis-retinol and oxidized into 11-cis-retinal, both processes involving CRALBP. Mutations in CRALBP are associated with visual disorders such as Bothnia dystrophy, retinitis punctata albescens, retinitis pigmentosa, and Newfoundland rod-cone dystrophy. CRALBP is a known marker for RPE and Müller glial cells of the retina.
