Target Information
Dicer is a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) endoribonuclease that plays a central role in short dsRNA-mediated post-transcriptional gene silencing. It cleaves long dsRNAs and short hairpin pre-microRNAs (miRNA) into 21–23 nucleotide fragments with 3′ overhangs, generating short interfering RNAs (siRNA) and mature microRNAs (miRNA).
These small RNAs guide the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to complementary RNAs for degradation or translational repression.
RNA interference (RNAi) mediated by siRNAs regulates the removal of transcripts from mobile or repetitive DNA elements and degradation of exogenous viral RNAs. The miRNA pathway specifically regulates target gene expression.
