Target Information

Glutathione peroxidases (Gpxs) are ubiquitously expressed proteins that catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxides and organic hydroperoxides by glutathione.
There are several isoforms differing in primary structure and localization:

• GPx1 (cGPx): Classical cytosolic/mitochondrial, selenium-dependent enzyme.
• GPx2 (GI-GPx): Intracellular enzyme expressed only at the gastrointestinal tract epithelium.
• GPx3 (pGPx): Extracellular plasma GPx mainly expressed by the kidney and released into the bloodstream.
• GPx4 (PH-GPx): Expressed in most tissues, reduces hydroperoxides integrated in membranes and lipids.

All mammalian GPx family members, except for the Cys-containing GPx3 and epididymis-specific secretory GPx5, possess selenocysteine at the active site.
