Target Information

PUM1 (pumilio homolog 1) is a sequence-specific RNA-binding protein that acts as a post-transcriptional repressor by binding the 3′-UTR of mRNA targets. It belongs to the PUF family of evolutionarily conserved RNA-binding proteins. PUM1 recognizes the consensus sequence 5′-UGUANAUA-3′, known as the Pumilio Response Element (PRE), related to the Nanos Response Element (NRE). It mediates repression through recruitment of the CCR4-POP2-NOT deadenylase complex, leading to translational inhibition and mRNA degradation. Mutations in PUM1 can cause spinocerebellar ataxia 47.
