Target Information
Ferritin is the major intracellular iron storage protein found in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes.
It is composed of 24 subunits of heavy (H) and light (L) chains, forming a holoenzyme shell with a molecular weight of about 450 kDa.
Ferritin can store up to 4,500 atoms of ferric iron.
Variation in subunit composition affects iron uptake and release rates in tissues.
Defects in the light chain ferritin gene are linked to neurodegenerative diseases and hyperferritinemia-cataract syndrome.
Ferritin is highly conserved and plays a key role in iron homeostasis.
