The Receptor-Binding Domain (RBD) in the S1 subunit binds strongly to human and bat ACE2 receptors, showing higher affinity than the SARS-CoV RBD.
SARS-CoV-2 S protein consists of:
- Signal peptide (aa 1–13)
- S1 subunit (aa 14–685) – receptor binding
- S2 subunit (aa 686–1273) – membrane fusion
The S-ECD represents the extracellular domain of the Spike protein.
