ERN1 (endoplasmic reticulum to nucleus signaling 1) is a serine/threonine kinase and endoribonuclease that mediates ER stress signaling. It acts as a sensor for unfolded proteins in the ER and transmits the unfolded protein response (UPR) by splicing XBP1 mRNA into an active transcriptional activator. ERN1 is essential for fetal viability and cell survival under ER stress conditions.
