Target Information
The INK4a locus on chromosome 9p21 is frequently affected in human tumors. It encodes two structurally distinct tumor suppressor proteins—p16INK4a and ARF (p14ARF in human, P19ARF in mouse).
These proteins interact with upstream tumor suppressors, retinoblastoma protein and p53, respectively, playing roles in cellular senescence, cell cycle control, and tumor suppression.
p14ARF (or P19ARF in mouse) can induce G1 and G2 phase arrest dependent on functional p53.
Differences in ARF function between species may contribute to varying tumor susceptibility.
