Target Information
ZEB2, also known as Smad interacting-protein 1, is a nuclear DNA-binding transcriptional repressor that interacts with activated SMADs. Like ZEB1, it inhibits transcription of the E-cadherin gene and induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process controlling cell migration during embryonic development and wound healing. ZEB2 also protects cells from DNA damage-induced apoptosis, suggesting a role in tumor progression. It is frequently observed in the cytoplasm of various cancer tissues, indicating regulated localization. Mutations in ZEB2 are associated with Hirschsprung disease and Mowat-Wilson syndrome.
