Target Information
ZEB2, also known as Smad interacting-protein 1, is a nuclear DNA-binding transcriptional repressor that interacts with activated SMADs. Similar to ZEB1, ZEB2 inhibits E-cadherin transcription and induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process critical for cell migration during embryonic development and wound healing. ZEB2 can protect cells from DNA damage-induced apoptosis, suggesting a role in tumor progression. Its cytoplasmic localization in various cancers implies regulation differences between normal and tumor tissues. Mutations in ZEB2 are associated with Hirschsprung disease/Mowat-Wilson syndrome.
