Target Information
Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin family that plays a key role in T cell signal transduction, differentiation, and activation.
CD8 is primarily expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer of CD8α and CD8β, functioning as a co-receptor with T cell receptor (TCR) for MHC class I molecules.
The CD8α chain is essential for MHC-I binding and is also expressed as a homodimer on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells.
Upon MHC-I/peptide complex ligation, CD8 recruits Lck kinase, leading to lymphokine production and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation.
Activated CTLs are crucial for pathogen and tumor cell clearance, with differentiation enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
