Target Information
Melanopsin is an opsin-like protein found in the retinal ganglion cells of mammals. It is part of a secondary optical system that parallels the classic rod and cone system. This system reports directly to the suprachiasmatic nucleus and regulates circadian rhythms. Melanopsin is believed to be the primary photopigment responsible for circadian rhythm regulation, and knockout mice show reduced ability to entrain to light/dark cycles.
