Target Information
Immunoglobulin classes share a basic four-polypeptide chain structure consisting of two heavy chains (five types) and two light chains (kappa, lambda; both with a molecular weight of approximately 22.5 kDa).
Kappa and lambda chains each have variable and constant regions, which can be distinguished by their antigenic properties. The typical ratio of kappa to lambda light chains is 70:30.
Antibodies against the kappa light chain are useful for identifying leukemias, plasmacytomas, and certain non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas. Demonstration of clonality in lymphoid infiltrates indicates a clonal and therefore malignant nature.
