Target Information
The HMG-box protein-1 (HBP1) is a member of the HMG family of transcription factors, characterized by the conserved HMG 1 box that mediates DNA binding. HBP1 interacts with tumor suppressor proteins Rb and p130 to initiate cell cycle arrest, a prerequisite for terminal cell differentiation. It also associates with MyoD proteins, regulating the expression of tissue-specific genes during muscle cell differentiation. The balance between HBP1 activity and MyoD-induced transcription determines progression of terminal differentiation.
