Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitoribosomes consist of a small 28S and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA ratio, opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. The proteins composing the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPS34 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein, and alternate splice variants have been described but not fully characterized.
