Target Information
NCSTN (Nicastrin) encodes a type I transmembrane glycoprotein that is a component of the gamma-secretase complex. This protein cleaves integral membrane proteins such as Notch receptors and beta-amyloid precursor protein. It may act as a stabilizing cofactor required for gamma-secretase complex assembly. The cleavage of beta-amyloid precursor protein produces amyloid beta peptide, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Mutations in this gene are associated with familial acne inversa. A pseudogene is located on chromosome 21.
