Target Information
NCSTN (Nicastrin) encodes a type I transmembrane glycoprotein, an integral component of the gamma-secretase complex. This protein cleaves integral membrane proteins, including Notch receptors and beta-amyloid precursor protein, and may serve as a stabilizing cofactor for gamma-secretase complex assembly. Cleavage of beta-amyloid precursor protein produces amyloid beta peptide, the main component of neuritic plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Although its exact role in Alzheimer’s disease remains uncertain, mutations in NCSTN are linked to familial acne inversa. A pseudogene is present on chromosome 21.
