Target Information
NCSTN (Nicastrin) encodes a type I transmembrane glycoprotein that is part of the gamma-secretase complex. This protein is involved in the cleavage of integral membrane proteins, including Notch receptors and beta-amyloid precursor protein. It may act as a stabilizing cofactor required for gamma-secretase complex assembly.
Cleavage of beta-amyloid precursor protein produces amyloid beta peptide, the main component of neuritic plaques characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease, though the exact role of Nicastrin in Alzheimer’s pathology remains uncertain.
Mutations in NCSTN are associated with familial acne inversa. A pseudogene of NCSTN is located on chromosome 21.
