Target Information
The membrane-associated protein encoded by this gene is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes and are divided into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
This protein belongs to the MDR/TAP subfamily, which is involved in multidrug resistance. The TAP2 gene is located 7 kb telomeric to ABCB2 and plays a key role in antigen presentation by forming a heterodimer with ABCB2 to transport peptides from the cytoplasm to the endoplasmic reticulum. Mutations in this gene may be associated with ankylosing spondylitis, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, and celiac disease. Alternative splicing produces two variants differing in peptide selectivity and MHC class I surface expression restoration.
