Target Information
Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are zinc metalloenzymes that catalyze the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. They are involved in respiration, calcification, acid-base balance, bone resorption, and the formation of aqueous humor, cerebrospinal fluid, saliva, and gastric acid.
CA1 encodes a cytosolic protein found primarily in erythrocytes and is closely linked to CA2 and CA3 genes on chromosome 8. Variants and alternatively spliced forms have been identified in various populations.
