Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular protein transport between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Vimentin, expressed along with desmin during early cellular development, is later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs. It plays a role in steroid synthesis by acting as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin leads to intermediate filament breakdown and cytoskeletal reorganization, facilitating cholesterol transport into mitochondria and enhancing steroidogenesis.
