Target Information
The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also found in the bone marrow and immune system. These arise from the long MBP gene (Golli-MBP), which includes three upstream exons.
Alternative splicing from Golli and MBP transcription start sites produces two sets of MBP-related transcripts and gene products:
- Golli-MBP family: Hybrid proteins with N-terminal Golli sequence linked to MBP sequence.
- Classic MBP family: Transcripts containing only MBP exons, producing the well-characterized myelin basic proteins.
This complex gene structure is conserved among species, suggesting its importance in function or regulation.
