Target Information

The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also present in the bone marrow and immune system. These mRNAs arise from the long MBP gene (Golli-MBP), which contains additional upstream exons. Alternative splicing from the Golli and MBP transcription start sites produces two sets of MBP-related transcripts and proteins.
Golli mRNAs contain three exons unique to Golli-MBP, spliced in-frame to one or more MBP exons, encoding hybrid proteins with N-terminal Golli and MBP amino acid sequences. The second transcript family contains only MBP exons, producing the well-characterized myelin basic proteins. This conserved gene structure among species suggests that the MBP transcription unit is part of the Golli transcription unit, important for gene function and/or regulation.
