Target Information

Expression of MC4R has been reported in the brain. Unlike other melanocortin receptors, MC4R is not expressed in adrenal cortex or melanocytes.

G-protein Coupled Receptors (GPCRs) comprise one of the largest families of signaling molecules with more than a thousand members predicted to exist. All GPCRs share a structural motif of seven membrane-spanning helices and exist in both active and inactive forms. Activating ligands induce conformational changes leading to G-protein signaling and downstream effects.

Studies have revealed mechanisms for negative regulation of GPCRs, which have significant implications for cellular physiology and pharmacological research. GPCR-targeted drugs such as Zyprexa (Eli Lilly) and Claritin (Schering-Plough) exemplify successful applications in mental health and allergy treatment.
