Target Information
Human growth hormone (hGH) is a member of the somatotropin/prolactin family of hormones involved in growth regulation. The GH1 gene and four related genes are located on chromosome 17, sharing high sequence identity. Alternative splicing produces five isoforms (~19–24 kDa). hGH is secreted by pituitary somatotroph cells and acts via cytokine receptor family membrane receptors. It promotes body growth by stimulating liver and other tissues to secrete IGF-1, enhances myoblast differentiation and proliferation, and increases amino acid uptake and protein synthesis. Mutations or deletions in GH1 cause growth hormone deficiency and short stature.
