Target Information
Luciferase is an enzyme that catalyzes a light-emitting reaction, found in various organisms such as bacteria, algae, fungi, jellyfish, insects, shrimp, and squid. The resulting light is termed bioluminescence.
In bacteria, the lux genes responsible for this reaction have been isolated and are widely used in the construction of bioreporters emitting blue-green light (maximum intensity at 490 nm).
The lux system comprises five genes — luxA, luxB, luxC, luxD, and luxE — which can be combined in different ways to produce various types of bioluminescent bioreporters.
