Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and aid in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition compared to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, complicating sequence homology recognition.
The MRPL43 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein. It overlaps with the SEMA4G gene at map location 10q24.31 and is transcribed in the opposite direction. Multiple transcript variants encode at least four different protein isoforms.
