Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA ratio—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising mitoribosomes vary greatly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPL30 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, with multiple transcript variants due to alternative splicing. Pseudogenes corresponding to this gene are found on chromosomes 6p and 12p, and read-through transcription occurs between this gene and the neighboring LIPT1 gene.
