Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA ratio—opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, often differing in sequence and biochemical properties, which complicates identification by sequence homology. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein.
