Target Information
Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer’s disease, affecting approximately 1% of people over 65 and 3% over 75.
Synphilin-1 (Synuclein alpha interacting protein, SNCAIP) interacts with alpha-synuclein in neurons and contains multiple protein-protein interaction domains.
Mutations in SNCAIP have been linked to Parkinson’s disease. The amino acid sequence of synphilin-1 shows strong homology with its human counterpart, particularly in ankyrin-like motifs and coiled-coil domains.
Expression patterns of mouse and human synphilin-1 are similar. Synphilin-1 plays a critical role in aggregate formation and cytotoxicity in Parkinson’s disease, potentially involving Dorfin-mediated ubiquitylation. It is also implicated in synaptic function, protein degradation, and neurodegenerative mechanisms.
