Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the vaccinia-related kinase (VRK) family of serine/threonine protein kinases. It is widely expressed in human tissues and shows increased expression in actively dividing cells such as testis, thymus, fetal liver, and carcinomas.
The protein localizes to the nucleus and promotes the stability and nuclear accumulation of transcriptionally active p53. It phosphorylates Thr18 of p53, reducing p53 ubiquitination, and may regulate cell proliferation.
Additionally, it phosphorylates histone, casein, and transcription factors ATF2 and c-JUN.
