Target Information
Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer’s, affecting about 1% of people over 65 and 3% over 75.
Synphilin-1 (Synuclein alpha interacting protein, SNCAIP) interacts with alpha-synuclein in neurons and mutations in SNCAIP are linked to Parkinson’s disease.
Synphilin-1 contains ankyrin-like motifs and coiled-coil domains, showing extensive homology with its human counterpart.
Expression patterns in mouse tissues are similar to human. Synphilin-1 plays a key role in aggregate formation and cytotoxicity in Parkinson’s disease. Dorfin may be involved through ubiquitylation of synphilin-1.
It contributes to synaptic function, protein degradation, and neurodegeneration mechanisms in Parkinson’s disease.
