  • Cellular Localization: Cytoplasm and nucleus; translocated into the nucleus upon activation by IFN-alpha/beta
  • Specificity Comments: Transcription regulatory factor mediating signaling by type I interferons (IFN-alpha and IFN-beta). Upon IFN binding, TYK2 and JAK1 kinases phosphorylate STAT1 and STAT2, which dimerize and associate with IRF9 (ISGF3G) to form the ISGF3 transcription factor complex that enters the nucleus and binds to the IFN-stimulated response element (ISRE), activating transcription of antiviral genes.

Target Information

Transcription factor essential for antiviral immunity. IRF9 mediates type I IFN signaling via association with phosphorylated STAT1:STAT2 dimers to form the ISGF3 complex. ISGF3 binds ISRE sequences to activate transcription of interferon-stimulated genes, driving antiviral cellular responses. [UniProt]
