Aldh3A1은 aldehyde dehydrogenase superfamily에 속하는 NAD(P)(+)-의존 효소로, 다양한 알리파틱 및 방향족 알데하이드의 산화를 촉매합니다.
이 단백질은 위와 각막에서 높게 발현되며, 특히 각막의 수용성 단백질 중 5~50%를 차지합니다.
Aldh3A1은 반응성 알데하이드의 해독뿐 아니라 UV 에너지의 직접 흡수를 통해 각막을 UV 유도 산화 스트레스로부터 보호하는 역할을 하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
Aldh3A1이 결핍된 마우스의 각막은 야생형과 구별되지 않으나, Aldh3A1 및 Aldh1A1이 모두 결핍된 경우 UVB 노출 후 백내장 형성이 증가하는 것으로 보고되었습니다. 이는 Aldh1A1이 Aldh3A1의 기능을 일부 보상할 수 있음을 시사합니다.
