Target Information

IL-15 (Interleukin 15) is a cytokine that regulates T and natural killer (NK) cell activation and proliferation. IL-15 and IL-2 share many biological activities as both bind common hematopoietin receptor subunits and may compete for the same receptor, thereby negatively regulating each other’s activity.

The number of CD8+ memory cells is controlled by the balance between IL-15 and IL-2. IL-15 induces activation of JAK kinases and phosphorylation of STAT3, STAT5, and STAT6 transcription activators.

In mice, IL-15 may increase expression of apoptosis inhibitor Bcl-xL, possibly via STAT6 activity, thus preventing apoptosis. IL-15 is important in the growth and differentiation of T and B lymphocytes, NK cells, macrophages, and monocytes, as well as activation of key intracellular signaling molecules.

IL-15 plays essential roles in immune responses, allograft rejection, and autoimmune disease pathogenesis. It is a widely expressed pro-inflammatory cytokine implicated in disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and pulmonary inflammation. Neutralization of IL-15 has shown beneficial effects in models of psoriasis and diabetes.
