Target Information
This gene encodes a DNA-binding protein with high specificity for scaffold or matrix attachment region DNA elements (S/MAR DNA). It may attach chromatin loop bases to the nuclear matrix, though its exact chromatin association remains debated. Scaffold attachment factors are nuclear matrix proteins that bind S/MAR regions. The encoded protein likely serves as a molecular base for transcriptosome complex assembly near actively transcribed genes. It regulates heat shock protein 27 transcription, acts as an estrogen receptor co-repressor, and is associated with breast tumorigenesis. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
