Cytokeratin pan is a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins characterized by biochemical diversity, represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides.
Cytokeratins range in molecular weight between 40–68 kDa, with isoelectric points between 4.9–7.8.
Expression patterns of cytokeratin subtypes vary among epithelial tissues and relate to the degree of differentiation.
These patterns are valuable in distinguishing epithelial malignancies, aiding tumor diagnosis through immunohistochemistry, cytopathology, and flow cytometry.
Keratin expression serves as a useful marker in cancer research and tumor diagnostics.
